Yes, the superiority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) over women is like the superiority of Thareed (a type of rice) over all other foods.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari) (1)
A Woman of Uniqueness
Hazrat Maryam was that pure and excellent woman whom Allah Almighty bestowed with the special feature that Gabriel (peace be upon him) would come and speak to her, come close to blowing into her bosom, and give her the good news of the birth of a great prophet from her chaste womb. Instead of asking for signs, as Zakariya (peace be upon him) had done, Hazrat Maryam accepted the power of Allah Almighty by accepting Gabriel’s words. This is why she was given the title of Siddiqah (truthful). Allah’s special gift was also that Hazrat Maryam was given superiority over other women of the time.
The story of Mary is mentioned in several places in the Holy Quran, for example:
Surah Aal-e-Imran, Surah Maryam, Surah At-Tahrim, Surah Al-Anbiya, and Surah Al-Mu’minun. These Surahs contain a story from the birth of Maryam to the birth and life of Jesus (peace be upon him).
Who was Maryam?
(Remember) when the wife of Imran said: “My Lord! I have vowed to dedicate to You what is in my womb.” (Surah Aal-e-Imran, verse 35) (2)
The wife of Imran was the mother of Maryam, and Imran was her father, just as Maryam was the mother of Jesus (peace be upon him). Maryam’s mother’s name was Hanna bint Faqoodh bin Qatayl, who was the sister of the wife of Zechariah (peace be upon him). (3)
The story of the birth of Maryam (peace be upon him)
Imran died before Maryam was born. Some commentators say that they had no children, to the point that Hazrat Imran’s wife vowed that if they had a son, she would dedicate him to the service of the Holy Mosque. But Allah’s wisdom was different, and a girl was born to them. Seeing this, she said: “This is a girl!”
A girl cannot be like a boy because a boy is free from many restrictions that a girl is not. Therefore, the goal seemed difficult to achieve.
The special nature of Hazrat Maryam and her son
Hazrat Maryam’s mother had prayed that she and her children be protected from the influence of Satan. So Allah Almighty accepted her prayer. As it is mentioned in the hadith:
It was narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
” Every son of Adam is afflicted by Satan when his mother gives birth to him, except Hazrat Maryam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and her son.” (Sahih Muslim) (4)
The guardianship of Mary and the favor of Allah Almighty
Mary’s mother picked up her daughter and handed her over to the mosque’s officials. Since Imran was the imam of the mosque, everyone insisted that he would be the guardian, while on the other hand, Zakariya (peace be upon him), who was Mary’s maternal uncle, also wanted to be the guardian.
Imam Ibn Kathir has written that they went to the banks of the Jordan River and cast lots to cast their pens there. The pen that would remain in the flow of water would be the guardian. Everyone threw their pens, and the water swept them away, except for Zakariya’s pen, which remained. It is said that the pen rose up in the opposite direction of the water. (5)
It was also a gift from Allah Almighty that the responsibility of guardianship fell on Zakariya (peace be upon him) so that Mary could learn piety, good deeds, and knowledge from him. A house was built for Mary on one side of the mosque where she would stay. Whenever Hazrat Zachariah went there, he would see unseasonal fruits and berries near Mary. He would ask: “Where did these come from?”
Then Hazrat Mary would reply:
“This is from Allah Almighty.”
(Surah Al-Imran, verse 37)
Another unseasonal fruit found
Hazrat Zachariah understood that Allah is capable of all things. If He can give Mary unseasonal fruits, He can also bless me with the blessing of a son in this old age. He went to his altar and humbly presented his request before Allah. Allah gave him the good news of Hazrat Yahya.
Giving birth to a son without a father: a manifestation of Allah Almighty’s perfect power
When Lady Mary reached her age, Allah willed that the Messiah should be born without a father, so that he would be a sign of power for the worlds and complete the argument for the Children of Israel and invite them to moderation and truth.
بی بی مریم علیہا السلام – قرآنی کہانی
“مردوں میں تو بہت سے کامل لوگ اتھے لیکن عورتوں میں فرعون کی بیوی آسیہ اور مریم بنت عمران علیھما السلام کے سوا اور کوئی کامل نہیں پیدا ہوئی ہاں عورتوں پر عائشہ رضی اللہ عنھا کی فضیلت ایسی ہے جیسے تمام کھانوں پر ثرید کی فضیلت ہے۔” (صحیح البخاری) (1)
انفرادیت کی حامل عورت
حضرت مریم وہ پاکیزہ اور بہترین عورت تھیں جنہیں اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس خصوصیت سے نوازا کہ جبریل علیہ السلام آکر ان سے بات کرتے، ان کے گریبان میں پھونکنے کے قریب آتے اور ان کے بطنِ عفیف سے ایک عظیم نبی کے پیدا ہونے کی بشارت سناتے۔ بجائے اس کے کہ نشانیاں طلب کریں، جیسا کہ زکریا علیہ السلام نے کیا تھا، حضرت مریم نے جبریل علیہ السلام کے قول پر اکتفا کرتے ہوئے اللہ تعالیٰ کی قدرت کو تسلیم کر لیا۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ آپ کو صدیقہ کا لقب ملا۔ اللہ کا خاص انعام یہ بھی تھا کہ حضرت مریم کو زمانے کی دیگر عورتوں پر فوقیت عطا فرمائی گئی۔
حضرت مریم کا واقعہ قرآنِ کریم میں متعدد مقامات پر ذکر ہوا ہے، مثلاً:
سورۃ آلِ عمران، سورۃ مریم، سورۃ التحریم، سورۃ الانبیاء، اور سورۃ المؤمنون۔ ان سورتوں میں حضرت مریم کی ولادت سے لے کر حضرت عیسیٰ علیہ السلام کی پیدائش اور زندگی کے احوال تک کا ذکر موجود ہے۔
حضرت مریم کون تھیں؟
- (یاد کرو) جب عمران کی بیوی نے کہا تھا: ’’یا رب! میں نے نذر مانی ہے کہ میرے پیٹ میں جو بچہ ہے، میں اسے ہر کام سے آزاد کر کے تیرے لیے وقف رکھوں گی۔‘‘ (سورہ آل عمران، آیت 35 ) (2)
حضرت عمران کی بیوی، حضرت مریم کی والدہ تھیں، اور عمران ان کے والد تھے، جس طرح مریم، حضرت عیسیٰ علیہ السلام کی والدہ تھیں۔ حضرت مریم کی والدہ کا نام حنہ بنت فاقوذ بن قتیل تھا، جو حضرت زکریا علیہ السلام کی زوجہ کی بہن تھیں۔ (3)
حضرت مریم علیہا السلام کی پیدائش کا واقعہ
ابھی حضرت مریم پیدا نہیں ہوئی تھیں کہ حضرت عمران کا انتقال ہو گیا۔ بعض مفسرین فرماتے ہیں کہ ان کے ہاں کوئی اولاد نہیں ہوئی تھی، یہاں تک کہ حضرت عمران کی بیوی نے نذر مانی کہ اگر ان کے ہاں لڑکا پیدا ہوا تو وہ اسے بیت المقدس کی خدمت کے لیے وقف کر دیں گی۔ مگر اللہ کی حکمت کچھ اور تھی، ان کے ہاں لڑکی پیدا ہوئی۔ یہ دیکھ کر وہ کہنے لگیں: “یہ تو لڑکی ہے!”
لڑکی، لڑکے کی طرح تو نہیں ہو سکتی کیونکہ لڑکا بہت سی ایسی پابندیوں سے آزاد ہوتا ہے جن سے لڑکی نہیں۔ اس لیے مقصد پورا ہونا مشکل نظر آ رہا تھا۔
حضرت مریم اور ان کے بیٹے کی خصوصیت
حضرت مریم کی والدہ نے دعا کی تھی کہ وہ اور ان کی اولاد شیطان کے اثر سے محفوظ رہے۔ چنانچہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان کی یہ دعا قبول فرمائی۔ جیسا کہ حدیث میں آتا ہے:
سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا:
- ” آدم کے ہر بیٹے کو جب اس کی ماں اسے جنم دیتی ہے۔ شیطان کچوکا لگاتا ہے، ماسوائے حضرت مریم علیہا السلام اور ان کے بیٹے کے۔” (صحیح مسلم) (4)
حضرت مریم کی کفالت اور اللہ تعالیٰ کا احسان
مریم کی والدہ نے اپنی بیٹی کو اٹھا کر مسجد کے ذمہ داران کے حوالے کر دیا۔ چونکہ حضرت عمران مسجد کے امام تھے، اس لیے سب لوگ اصرار کرنے لگے کہ وہ کفالت کریں گے، جبکہ دوسری طرف حضرت زکریا علیہ السلام، جو مریم کے ماموں یا خالو تھے، وہ بھی کفالت کے خواہاں تھے۔
امام ابن کثیر نے لکھا ہے کہ وہ دریائے اردن کے کنارے گئے اور وہاں اپنے قلم ڈالنے کے لیے قرعہ اندازی کی۔ جو قلم پانی کے بہاؤ میں باقی رہے گا، وہی کفالت کرے گا۔ سب نے اپنے قلم پھینکے، پانی انہیں بہا لے گیا، سوائے زکریا کے قلم کے، جو باقی رہ گیا۔ کہا جاتا ہے کہ وہ قلم پانی کی مخالف سمت میں اوپر چڑھ گیا۔ (5)
یہ بھی اللہ تعالیٰ کا انعام تھا کہ کفالت کی ذمہ داری حضرت زکریا علیہ السلام پر آ گئی تاکہ حضرت مریم ان سے تقویٰ، اعمالِ صالحہ، اور علم سیکھیں۔ حضرت مریم کے لیے مسجد کے ایک طرف ایک مکان بنا دیا گیا تھا جہاں وہ قیام فرماتی تھیں۔ جب بھی حضرت زکریا وہاں جاتے، بے موسم پھل اور میوے مریم کے پاس دیکھتے۔ وہ پوچھتے: ’’یہ کہاں سے آئے؟‘‘
تو حضرت مریم جواب دیتیں:
- “یہ اللہ تعالیٰ کی جانب سے ہے۔”
(سورۃ آل عمران، آیت 37)
ایک اور بے موسم پھل کا مل جانا
حضرت زکریا سمجھ گئے کہ اللہ ہر چیز پر قادر ہے۔ جب مریم کو بے موسم پھل دے سکتا ہے، وہی ذات مجھے بھی اس بڑھاپے کی عمر میں بیٹے کی نعمت سے نواز سکتی ہے۔ اپنے محراب کے پاس گئے اور اللہ کے سامنے اپنا مطالبہ عاجزی کے ساتھ پیش کیا۔ اللہ نے حضرت یحییٰ کی خوشخبری سنادی۔
بغیر باپ کا بیٹا جنم دینا: اللہ تعالی کی قدرت کاملہ کا مظہر
جب بی بی مریم اپنی عمر کو پہنچی تو اللہ نے چاہا کہ اب مسیح نے بغیر باپ کے پیدا ہونا ہے، تاکہ عالمین کے لیے قدرت کی ایک نشانی ہو اور بنی اسرائیل پر اتمامِ حجت کر کے ان کو اعتدال اور حق کی جانب دعوت دے۔
